Big Bang Theory Apartment Floor Plan: 4A and 4B, Framed

Most people who watched all twelve seasons could sketch the Big Bang Theory apartment floor plan from memory. The couch with Sheldon's spot. The whiteboards. The kitchen island nobody really eats at. The stairs past an elevator that never works, and Penny's door just across the hall. It's one of the most lived-in sets on television, and it was never a real apartment.

We make 3D floor plan frames, and The Big Bang Theory: Apartment 4A & 4B is our fan-inspired take on both apartments and the landing between them. Here's what the frame shows, how the layout fits together, and why it makes a good gift for someone who still knocks like Sheldon.

The Big Bang Theory apartment floor plan on our frame

The frame shows the whole fourth floor from straight above. We laser-cut the walls from pine and build them up in layers, so they stand off the backing and throw small shadows. The furniture is engraved into the floor of each room. Under the plan, the label reads The Big Bang Theory and 2311 North Los Robles Avenue.

On the right is Apartment 4A, the biggest piece. You can see the living room with the sofa and armchairs around a rug, the dining table, the desk corner and the kitchen with its island. A hallway runs off to the bathroom and the two bedrooms. In the middle is the stairwell, with the stairs wrapping around the elevator shaft. On the left is Apartment 4B, Penny's place, with its own living room, kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom.

Every frame is assembled by hand in Singapore, one at a time.

Big Bang Theory apartment layout: 4A, the stairs and 4B

In the show, Apartment 4A is the main set. Leonard and Sheldon share it for most of the series, and it's where the group eats takeout, plays games and argues about physics. The living room and kitchen are one open space, and the hallway to the bedrooms tucks away behind it.

Apartment 4B, across the hall, is close to a mirror image of 4A with one bedroom fewer. RoomSketcher has a good 3D tour of both Big Bang Theory apartments if you want to see the rooms furnished in full.

The stairs matter too. So many scenes happen on those landings that it would feel wrong to leave them out. The elevator was broken by one of Leonard's rocket fuel experiments, as the show explains in The Staircase Implementation, so everyone walks. On our frame it's still broken.

The layout also changes who lives where over the years. Later in the series Sheldon and Amy move into 4B, and Penny moves in with Leonard in 4A. The rooms stay the same, which is part of why the plan feels so familiar.

Is the Big Bang Theory apartment real?

No. 2311 North Los Robles Avenue is the address the show gives for the building in Pasadena, but the apartments were sets. Chuck Lorre has said the location is fictional, and the views of Pasadena through the windows were photos taken for the production.

So any Big Bang Theory apartment floor plan, ours included, is a plan of the rooms as they look on screen. Ours is a fan-inspired layout of both apartments as most people picture them, not a copy of the set drawings or a survey of a real building.
