• The day the sale completed or the paperwork was signed.

10 ways to celebrate your 1 year house anniversary

None of these need a party or a budget. Pick two or three.

1. Eat your first-night meal again. Whatever you ate surrounded by boxes, order it again and eat it in the same spot.
2. Take the same photo every year. Choose one view, such as the front door or the corner by the window, and photograph it from the same place on every housiversary. In ten years you will have a quiet record of everything that changed.
3. Film a one-minute walk-through. Phone in hand, walk from the door through every room.
4. Write the year down. First guest, first thing that broke, first neighbour whose name you learned. One page, kept in a drawer, added to each year.
5. Invite the people who helped you move. Feed the friends who carried the fridge.
6. Plant something. A tree in the garden, or a pot on the balcony or the windowsill if you live in a flat.
7. Finally fix the small thing. The cabinet door that sticks, the bulb nobody replaced. Doing it on the day makes it feel like a gift to the house.
8. Hang what is still leaning on the wall. Almost every home has one picture waiting for a nail.
9. Seal a letter for year five. Write to your future selves about what you hope the home becomes, and open it on the fifth anniversary.
10. Look at the floor plan again. Dig out the plan you studied before you moved in and mark where life actually happens now. It is usually not where you expected.
