12 Closing Gift Ideas for First-Time Home Buyers
Most closing gift ideas for first-time home buyers start with a bottle of wine and a candle. Both are gone within a month, and nobody remembers who brought them.
We make floor plan frames for a living, so yes, we have a favorite. But the right gift depends on who's giving it and what the buyers need that week, so this list has practical things on it as well as keepsakes. If you call it a settlement gift where you live, all of it still applies.
What first-time buyers actually want from a closing gift
Agents ask this on Reddit too. In one long r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer thread, an agent asked buyers what they'd been given, and the two answers that kept coming up were a hardware store gift card and a professional clean before move-in. Nobody got excited about branded mugs.
So start from their first month. Most first-time buyers move in with a long list of small problems and not much money left over. A gift that fixes one of those problems gets used. A gift that marks the day gets kept. The ones people still mention years later usually manage both.
A few rules we'd stick to. Put their names or the date on it, not your logo. Skip anything big or fragile; a fiddle leaf fig is a lot to hand someone who doesn't own a watering can yet. And write the card by hand.
12 closing gift ideas for first-time home buyers
1. A 3D floor plan frame of their new home
This is the one we make, so take our enthusiasm with a pinch of salt.
The floor plan is the only thing that belongs to their home and nobody else's. As wall art, it records the rooms exactly as they were on key day, before the renovation and the furniture shuffling start. Our Signature 3D Floor Plan Frame is laser-cut from pinewood and built up in layers, so the walls stand slightly proud of the backing. You add their names, a date and an optional headline, then upload the plan. We send you a proof, and nothing gets cut until you approve it.

2. A framed photo from key day
If you were at the handover, you've probably got a photo of them grinning at the front door. Get it printed properly and put it in a plain frame. It costs very little, and it can be the gift that makes someone tear up.
3. A keepsake box
A wooden box engraved with their names and the year. Somewhere for the spare first key, the closing photos and the paint swatches they'll want later.
4. A map of their new neighborhood
Good for buyers who've moved from another city. It's about the area as much as the house, which matters when they don't know anyone on the street yet.
5. A hardware store gift card
Unglamorous, and one of the gifts buyers brought up most in that Reddit thread. Write one specific thing it's for on the card, like "the first shelf you put up."
6. A deep clean before they move in
"Broom clean" rarely means clean. Booking a proper clean before the furniture arrives gives them back a weekend in the most tiring month of the year. If you're the agent, you probably know a good cleaner already.
7. A starter toolkit
A level, a stud finder, a decent screwdriver set and some picture hooks. First-time owners almost never have these until the day they need them, and that day comes fast.
8. A first-night box
Paper plates, a phone charger, toilet paper, trash bags, good coffee and a box cutter. Anyone who has moved knows why this works.
9. A local restaurant or food delivery voucher
Cooking in a kitchen full of boxes is miserable. Pick the place locals actually go to and add a note about what to order. You've just given them their first regular spot.
10. An engraved serving board
Put their surname or street name on the back so the front still gets used. It'll come out for the first dinner they host.
11. A return address stamp
Small and oddly satisfying. They'll use it on every card and form they send from the new address.
12. A custom doormat
Name or house number. It'll wear out eventually, and that's fine. It will have done its job by then.
If you can stretch to two gifts, pair something from the practical end of this list (5 to 9) with a keepsake (1 to 4). That way they get help with the first week and something that's still on the wall years from now.
Why floor plan gifts work so well for realtors
Agents have one big advantage over family and friends here. You already have the floor plan from the listing. You can order as soon as the offer is accepted, without asking the buyers for anything or spoiling the surprise.
It also takes the guesswork out. You don't need to know if they drink or cook. A frame with their names and their own rooms suits almost any home, and because your branding isn't on it, it stays up. If you're an agent buying for clients, here's how our closing gifts work for agents.
We've seen this happen with customers, too. One bought a frame for a young couple in her family who had just bought their first home, then wrote to tell us she planned to give them to her own clients as settlement gifts.
For parents and friends, ask the buyers for the plan from their sales documents or the developer's brochure, or quietly ask their agent. A clear hand-drawn sketch is fine as long as the room boundaries are easy to see.

How to order a personalized floor plan frame before closing
Here's how it works on our site.
- Find the floor plan. We take JPG, PNG or PDF files up to 20MB. A PDF export from CAD software works if all the layers are visible, and a hand-drawn plan is fine as a clear photo or scan.
- Choose the wording. There's a names line (up to 40 characters) and a date line (up to 50). "Priya & Daniel" and "Keys collected 14 November 2026" both fit with room to spare. Check the spelling with someone who knows them, because once it's cut, it's cut.
- Pick a headline, or leave it off. The options right now are "Where Life Happens" and "Build Your Own Dreams."
- Decide about furniture. Keep the layout as uploaded, or choose "Furnish with AI" and furniture gets placed in each room based on its size and use. You'll see a preview, and you can re-upload if you want it done again.
- Order and approve the proof. You can upload the plan straight away or send it after checkout, and we'll email you instructions. Nothing is cut until you've signed off on the design.
There's one size, 24 cm wide by 32.7 cm tall and 4.5 cm deep (about 9.4 by 12.9 inches). That's small enough for a bookshelf and big enough to hang on its own.

How far ahead to order a closing gift
Each frame is made to order in Singapore. It takes 3 to 5 days to make and arrives within about 10 days. Add a day or two for you to approve the proof and it works out to roughly two to three weeks. Order when the offer is accepted, not the week of closing.
If you're cutting it close, email myhausframes@gmail.com before you order and we'll tell you straight whether it can make your date.
Two more things before you order. Plans are single level for now (multi-level is on the way), so for a two-story house, pick the floor where they'll spend most of their time. And because each frame is custom, we can't take returns unless it arrives damaged or faulty. Read the proof properly.
What to write in the closing gift card
The card is the part people reread. Keep it short and about them. Mention the offer that nearly fell through or the moment they first walked into the kitchen, then sign off with your name.
One we like reads, "Alex and Sam, I won't forget your faces when the sellers said yes. Welcome home. Jo"
If you're the agent and want them to keep your details, tuck a business card into the packaging rather than writing a pitch in the card.
Closing gift FAQ
How much should you spend on a closing gift for first-time buyers?
There's no fixed rule. Guides for agents, including realtor.com's, commonly suggest a few percent of the commission, and plenty of good gifts cost under $100. For family and friends, spend what you'd spend on a big birthday. A personal gift at a modest price usually lands better than an expensive generic one.
Are closing gifts tax deductible?
In the US, the IRS limits the deduction for business gifts to $25 per recipient per year, and incidental costs like engraving, packaging and mailing generally don't count toward that limit. The details are in IRS Publication 463. Rules are different in other countries, so check with your accountant.
When should you give a closing gift?
At the key handover if you can, or within the first couple of weeks after they move in. A made-to-order gift that turns up in week two is fine, and it's often easier to enjoy once the boxes are unpacked.
What do first-time home buyers want as a closing gift?
Mostly help with the first month, like a hardware store gift card or a deep clean, plus one thing with their names on it that marks the day.
Should a realtor put their logo on a closing gift?
We'd keep it off the gift itself and put your name on the card or the packaging instead. People are far happier displaying something with their own names on it.
Can I order a floor plan frame before I have the floor plan?
Yes. Place the order and send the plan after checkout. We'll email you upload instructions, and nothing is cut until you approve the proof.
